Accelerated Engineering and Leadership
In a 16-month program, you will learn about the latest in technology being developed at Freeport-McMoRan’s Process Technology Center (PTC) and being applied to company properties throughout the world. This program is designed to help new Metallurgists and Chemical Engineers develop a wide base of knowledge and experience, placing you on the path to an exceptional career in the company.
Located in Safford, Ariz., the PTC has research and development plants in the historic Morenci mining district and active involvement throughout Freeport-McMoRan operations. These include the Safford mine—one of the first new mines opened in the U.S. in the last 30 years.
Our Graduate Development Program is organized into four 16-week assignments, or modules. Engineers will review the science and practice of mining with their peers and leading engineers from Freeport-McMoRan. Through open group discussion and evaluation of the current state of technology, individual engineers will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the industry at an accelerated pace, positioning themselves for an exceptional career within the global network of Freeport-McMoRan properties.
Leaching
In addition to conventional heap leach modeling through column testing and full-scale advanced heap design and construction, PTC engineers are involved in the development and installation of the world’s first commercial copper pressure leaching plant at Morenci, Ariz. Developing an understanding of chemical processing and materials of construction, engineers will develop and use skills from multiple disciplines.
Mineral Processing
The Mineral Processing Department at the PTC focuses on helping Freeport-McMoRan concentrators optimize operations. This typically is accomplished through: - technology projects that evolve from collaborations - actual on-site grinding and flotation surveys - requests from the operating sites
SX/EW
At the full-scale Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) test facility, engineers will be involved in evaluating new materials and reagents and providing answers that are immediately transferable to commercial production. The development of alternative anode technology at this lab is revolutionizing the application of copper electrowinning technology. The development and installation of full-scale direct electrowinning powder production is another area where new graduates will incorporate theory, practice, and problem-solving skills to real-world challenges.
Mineralogy & Material Characterization / Analytical Services / Computer Modeling Applications
Engineers will have access to the latest in Analytical Services at Freeport-McMoRan’s Central Analytical Services Center (CASC). This new facility features a highly automated robotic-controlled lab for sample preparation coupled with automated wet chemistry modules, providing a data link to the North American operations.
Access to training classes in science and technology is an important aspect of the Development Program. Engineers will add to their own skill set through selected training opportunities.
In addition to the benefit of working in one of the most accelerated development programs within the company, program participants will also enjoy the following benefits:
Freeport-McMoRan offers the following to Graduate Development Program participants:
