Sustainable Design Aspects for Underground Expansion Projects at PTFI

PTFI is installing new lighting as part of the underground expansion.  A cost/benefit analysis was performed to identify certain benefits that LED lighting may provide versus conventional high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures.

The LED lighting will cost about $2 million more than HPS fixtures; however, LED lighting will ultimately consume less energy, yield lower electrical costs, generate less GHG emissions and reduce maintenance costs due to longer lamp life with LED.  The lifetime costs include lamp replacement every 15 years for LEDs as opposed to every two years for HPS fixtures.  During year seven, the cost/benefit of LEDs over HPS fixtures is realized.

By installing LEDs instead of HPS fixtures for the underground expansion, PTFI will save $7.3 million dollars and avoid over 56,000 metric tons of CO2 over the next 30 years.
