Health and Safety

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold is committed to the elimination of all workplace injuries and illnesses. We believe that our most important asset is our people and that achieving zero injuries and illnesses and maintaining that standard is the only morally acceptable level of performance in health and safety management. Our vision of eliminating all injuries and illnesses encompasses not only safety in the workplace but also extends to off-the job activities at home and within the communities in which we do business.

To achieve this level of performance, the company acknowledges and promotes health and safety as a core value.  Additionally, we have developed management systems designed to integrate within the business system of the company that will result in an injury-free work culture.

Responsibility and Accountability

Safety is a fundamental responsibility of each employee of the corporation. Management is held accountable for promoting safety on and off the job, providing a safe work environment in which hazards are controlled when elimination is not feasible, and for the implementation of systems and techniques designed to prevent incidents from occurring.

All employees at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold are responsible for their own safety and that of their co-workers. Individuals are provided the necessary training and education to ensure their ability to identify workplace exposures and control risks. It is the objective of the corporation that every employee be enrolled into the vision and actively involved in the practice and ownership of safety in the workplace.

Safe Production

“Safe production” is our operational philosophy. This combination of safety and productivity should not be viewed as being mutually exclusive or contradictory. Instead, every action is taken to ensure that production is maximized while maintaining complete control of the health and safety of those at work. These are always considered together.
