On December 26, 2004, a massive earthquake
- one of the five strongest ever recorded - struck off the coast of
North Sumatra in Indonesia, triggering powerful waves called
tsunamis that devastated the coastlines of Aceh province in
Indonesia and areas of Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and other nations
as far away as Somalia in Africa. The devastation was staggering.
The human lives lost are estimated to total nearly 300,000, with
more than 200,000 of those in Aceh province. This was one of the
world's most shocking catastrophes and the hearts of people in all
nations in our global community were filled with compassion and
sorrow.

Our operations, located in Indonesia's
easternmost province of Papua, were not impacted by this terrible
event 3,000 miles away in the westernmost province of Aceh. As part
of the larger Indonesian community, we moved quickly to assist those
in Indonesia who suffered in this event. Freeport-McMoRan Copper &
Gold Inc. and PT Freeport Indonesia provided cash contributions in
Indonesia and in the U.S. for immediate assistance and to
encourage fundraising efforts. We also provided airplanes to
transport food and medical supplies, aid workers and government
officials to the stricken area. In addition, our employees made
generous cash contributions and the Company matched these.
PT Freeport Indonesia also provided assistance to residents of
Nabire in Papua after the earthquake there on November 26, 2004,
including the donation of goods and the services of medical
personnel and the provision of numerous chartered flights to
transport assistance to victims. These efforts are consistent with
Freeport's view of its responsibility as a corporate citizen and its
policy of helping strengthen the communities where we operate.
