Provision of Medical Services
One of the most important positive impacts from PT Freeport Indonesia's presence in Papua has been the provision of medical services carried out through LPMAK. Prior to the initiation of the programs supported by PT Freeport Indonesia, healthcare was minimal or nonexistent in our operations area. We have worked for years to develop an integrated and coordinated public healthcare system to deliver comprehensive and competent medical services to the local Papuans, both in the highlands and lowlands areas near our operations, and to be capable of sustaining itself at the end of mine life.

This system relies on 10 community-based health clinics providing a range of preventive and outpatient services, coordinated with two modern hospitals which provide comprehensive inpatient healthcare. Construction was completed in 2002 of a 74-bed hospital in Banti which is now providing healthcare to Papuans in the highlands area. A separate hospital opened in Timika in 1999 to serve Papuans living in the lowlands. After expansion in 2004, the Timika hospital can accommodate 101 patients. PT Freeport Indonesia provided funds to construct both of these facilities and to support the clinics providing quality medical care to those living in other communities.

Thousands of Papuans receive quality medical services each year from this system. The entire community benefits from comprehensive public health programs supported by PT Freeport Indonesia for prenatal and child care, and the prevention and control of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Included are educational programs on nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases, water and food hygiene; and a comprehensive vector control program to limit the spread of malaria. The results have been gratifying - dramatically reducing infant mortality and the incidence of malaria, and achieving a tuberculosis cure rate of 93 percent. To combat the spread of HIV/AIDS, PT Freeport Indonesia has a Company HIV/AIDS policy and proactive educational programs both for employees and the public, carried out cooperatively with the government.
