PT Freeport Indonesia supports
an active program of public outreach to help make employees and
local inhabitants more aware of the environment and their
relation to it. The program makes use of the Twin Levees
Reclamation Demonstration Area, the surrounding natural
ecosystems and PT Freeport Indonesia operations related to the
environment such as the Environmental Laboratory and our waste
handling facilities. The program focuses on schoolchildren and
teachers, but also includes local stakeholders, employees,
government officials, local NGOs, media, police and army units.
During 2006 we developed a campground in the Milepost 21
reclamation demonstration area, organized bird watching events,
supported Ladies Club gardening, and developed a local
ornamental plant (including many species of orchids) area with
the guidance of a Papuan ornamental plant expert from Jayapura.
We also constructed plant nurseries at schools to allow hands-on
experience with plant growth and care. Environmental Day and
Clean Town Day activities in area towns are also part of the
program.

The Natural
Succession Discovery Park offers numerous opportunities
for employees and the local community to observe and
learn about nature in a portion of the tailings
deposition area near Timika. Freeport's Trian
Purnamasari is pictured leading a group of local school
children on a field trip to identify the plant and
animal species present in the area. |
