Water Discharges

PT Freeport Indonesia In 2015, PTFI discharged approximately 36.6 million cubic meters of water carrying tailings and other sediments into a mixing zone below the terrestrial tailings deposition area (ModADA). Since 2008, water quality has been monitored at compliance points Kelapa Lima and Pandan Lima as governed by the Decree "Conditions for Tailing Management of PT Freeport Indonesia at Modified Ajkwa Deposition Area (ModADA) at Mimika District, Papua Province," Number 431 of 2008, issued in July 2008 by the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Indonesia (GOI). The decree also requires PTFI to meet sea water quality standard for aquatic fauna at three marine compliance points at Arafura Sea. All water quality data show PTFI’s compliance to the standards.

Please see Controlled Riverine Tailings Management for more information.
