Fully Integrated Copper Producer
Follow copper’s role in America, and you’ll find the making of a modern economy.
From early telegraph networks to the systems that brought water, light and power into everyday life, copper has been at the center of progress. It runs through the infrastructure that built cities and the technologies that connect us today, including our mobile devices.
Across more than two centuries of combined history, Freeport and its predecessor companies have been part of many of the milestones that shaped this country — helping enable growth, electrification and industrial expansion across generations.
Today, that role is even more critical. As the largest copper producer in the United States, Freeport supplies approximately 70% of the refined copper produced domestically.
With fully integrated operations across the Southwest U.S. and one of the largest copper resource positions in the country, Freeport is now entering a period of brownfield growth.
As America looks to the future, Freeport continues to support the systems powering what comes next—technology, transportation, infrastructure, and emerging technologies still being imagined. None of it happens without copper.
And when you follow America’s copper, you’ll find Freeport — proud to be America’s Copper Champion™.
Copper’s Role in Critical Sectors
Over 65% of the world’s copper is used in applications that deliver electricity.
Freeport's U.S. Market Share For Copper
Freeport plays a dominant role in U.S. copper, with its mines accounting for approximately 60% of domestic production in 2025. The company operates seven open pit copper mines in the United States, including the Morenci mine in Arizona. As the largest copper mine in the country, Morenci produced nearly 700 million pounds of copper in 2025 and operates at a scale unmatched within the U.S. industry.
Freeport processes copper across leaching, smelting and refining to produce copper cathode. The company also operates one of only two active copper smelters in the United States and accounts for approximately 70% of refined copper production in the country.

Economic Impact Across the U.S.
Freeport’s U.S. economic impact report highlights a total national impact of $13.8 billion in 2025, supporting jobs, communities and critical supply chains across the country. This impact is estimated to support more than 100,000 U.S. jobs, along with a broad network of suppliers and local businesses.
Impact studies are conducted annually by Arizona State University's L. William Seidman Research Institute.
Global Copper Demand Projected Growth
Global demand for copper is accelerating, driven by rapid growth in electrification, digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.
At the same time, supply is becoming increasingly constrained, putting pressure on supply chains that underpin economic growth, national security and energy systems.
For the United States, this presents a defining challenge: ensuring reliable, domestic sources of copper to support long-term competitiveness.
Strengthening domestic production is essential to reducing reliance on foreign supply, securing critical materials and enabling the next generation of American innovation.
Freeport plays a central role in meeting that need — providing the scale, capability and long-term investment required to support America’s copper future.
Learn more about Freeport's Growth and Innovation
To meet future copper demand in the United States, Freeport is driving value through innovative growth and cost reduction. Innovative leaching and the expansion of the Bagdad mine, including increased milling capacity and continued resource development, support a potential ~60% increase in annual copper production.
Learn more below about how we are increasing copper production through innovation.
Innovative Leaching Initiatives
Freeport is advancing new approaches to recover more copper from existing U.S. ore bodies — using improved processing techniques and data-driven insights to extend production from materials that were previously considered lower value. By getting more out of what’s already mined, these efforts help strengthen domestic supply while improving efficiency and reducing waste. The approach supports more consistent output from existing operations as demand for copper continues to grow across the country.
Autonomous Haulage
Bagdad’s Autonomous Haulage System (BAHS) represents a major step forward in mining innovation, operating the only fully autonomous haul truck fleet in North America with more than 30 trucks in service. Since deployment, the system has safely moved more than 50 million pounds of material, demonstrating both scale and reliability in a production environment. The technology enhances safety while improving efficiency and consistency across the operation. It also reflects Freeport’s commitment to its people — upskilling employees into roles like autonomous system controllers, maintenance technicians and data specialists while keeping experienced teams actively engaged in the operation.
Integrated Remote Operations Center (IROC)
Freeport’s Integrated Operations Center (IROC) connects U.S. mining operations through a centralized hub, using real-time data and advanced analytics to monitor and improve performance across sites. By bringing together insights from across the country, IROC helps teams make faster, more informed decisions that strengthen efficiency, coordination, and reliability. This integrated approach supports more consistent operations while helping meet the growing demand for domestically produced resources.
Advancing Recovery Through Innovation
Freeport is applying a range of advanced technologies across its U.S. operations, from robotic inspection tools to semi-autonomous systems and ultra-class haul trucks. These tools provide new visibility into equipment and conditions, helping teams identify issues earlier, improve maintenance, and keep operations running efficiently. By combining automation with real-time insights, these technologies support more consistent, reliable production to help meet growing domestic demand.
