Company-funded Soccer Academy Captures National Youth Championship

May 30, 2025 - A soccer academy sponsored by PT Freeport Indonesia recently went undefeated in a national tournament to capture the championship in its age group.
The Papua Football Academy, based in Timika, defeated six top-tier teams from around Indonesia to win the championship in its age group at the Barati International Cup 2025.The tournament culminated with PSA securing a 1-0 win over Palembon FC Bojonegoro in the final match.
“Congratulations to Papua Football Academy for their tremendous achievement at the Barati International Cup 2025,” said Claus Wamafma, PTFI Director and Executive Vice President-Sustainable Development. “This success shows that Papuan youth have what it takes to thrive at the national level. PT Freeport Indonesia remains committed to supporting the development of Papuan youth, helping them grow into a competitive, engaged, and ambitious generation.”
Held in Gresik Regency, East Java — home to PTFI’s new Manyar smelter — the Barati International Cup brought together dozens of under-14 youth soccer clubs from across Indonesia. The PFA team arrived early to acclimate and boost team camaraderie, even playing a few friendly matches to get ready. This preparation proved vital, especially as it marked PFA’s debut in a competition of this scale.
While the tournament carries an “international” title, foreign clubs from Japan, Malaysia and India participated only in the coaching clinic sessions. The competition itself featured Indonesian teams exclusively.
Just the beginning
Winning a national championship is a monumental achievement — but for PFA, it’s just the beginning. The academy remains grounded, focused on growth, and hungry for future success, said Kelly Pepuho, PFA’s coach.
“Our students showed incredible spirit throughout the tournament,” Pepuho said. “But I always remind them to stay humble — this is just the start of our journey toward even greater accomplishments.”
For PFA, the Barati Cup was more than just a competition — it was a transformative experience. The team gained exposure to high-level play, learning to perform under pressure and adapt to the demands of a national league, Pepuho said.
