From Timika to the Mainstage: Taruna Papua Students Shine at Broadway Camp in Jakarta

July 31, 2025 - Ten students from the Taruna Papua Boarding School spent part of their summer break enhancing their creativity and teamwork at the week-long Camp Broadway Indonesia program, which culminated with a performance of the musical, “Peter Pan Jr.” at the 2025 Mainstage Jakarta showcase.
This marks the second consecutive year Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua or SATP students have joined Camp Broadway Indonesia, reflecting PTFI and SATP’s ongoing commitment to delivering a holistic, high-quality education – especially for students from indigenous communities near the Grasberg mining operations.
“PTFI is committed to providing meaningful platforms for local Papuan children to express themselves, including through the arts,” said Katri Krisnati, PTFI Vice President-Corporate Communications.
Camp Broadway Indonesia is an annual summer program designed to nurture the artistic talents of Indonesian youth aged 10 to 17. Participants from across the country gather to explore musical theater, singing and dance, all taught using Broadway standards. Over six intensive days, students engage in rigorous rehearsals leading up to the grand finale: the Mainstage Jakarta performance, held this year at the Beacon Academy Theater in East Jakarta.
One of the SATP students, Titita Omaleng, expressed her gratitude for the experience.
“I learned to be confident and to believe in myself,” she said. “Thank you, Freeport Indonesia, for giving us this opportunity and for your continued commitment to developing Papuan youth.”
The students’ talent and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on Adit Manciano, Camp Broadway Indonesia’s artistic director.
“We are committed to offering transformative experiences to youth from every corner of Indonesia,” Manciano said. “It’s an honor to welcome the gifted students of SATP once again.”
Velix Wanggai, former Acting Governor of the Papuan Highlands, attended the performance and praised the students’ talent and artistry.
“I’m deeply moved and impressed by PTFI’s unwavering support for Papuan youth from various tribes,” he said. “Their dedication to uplifting local communities is truly commendable. May their efforts continue to bring hope and progress to Papua.”
Sekolah Asrama Taruna Papua is a boarding school built by PTFI through a partnership fund managed by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation. It offers tuition-free primary education to children from five local tribes near the Grasberg operations, including the Amungme and Kamoro communities.
